Liverpool: Why does Iraola need Araujo?

Liverpool finalized the loan signing of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona for the 2026-27 campaign.

This deal came quite unexpectedly, but looking at Liverpool's squad situation, the decision by Iraola and the club's management has a clear rationale.

Iraola needs a center-back who can play immediately.

Liverpool's most urgent issue lies in the center of defense. Ibrahima Konate left the club to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, while Joe Gomez is dealing with fitness problems. Jeremy Jacquet, a £50 million-plus signing from Rennes, has not played a single match for Liverpool due to a shoulder injury. Giovanni Leoni has also been unavailable during the pre-season period.

In that context, Liverpool cannot rely solely on young players. The team needs an experienced center-back who is ready to play immediately and won't take too long to adapt to the top level. Araujo clearly fits that requirement.

At 27, the Uruguayan center-back is at a stage expected to reach his peak professionally. He has spent years at Barcelona, featuring in La Liga and Champions League matches, and is also a Uruguay international. Araujo has even captained Barcelona.

Liverpool's choice of a player accustomed to pressure at a big club rather than a young center-back highlights the urgency of the deal. This became even clearer after the friendly against Monaco at Anfield. Liverpool led 2-0 but eventually lost 2-3.

In this match, Liverpool frequently pushed their full-backs high, while adopting a man-to-man defense and high-intensity pressing. This style made the team more proactive, but also left the center-backs to cover large spaces behind.

That is where Araujo can add value. The Uruguayan center-back possesses speed, strength, and tackling ability suited for situations where the defense faces large spaces. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick also highly valued these qualities of Araujo. However, Flick believed the Uruguayan didn't quite fit Barcelona's current tactical system and wanted a new challenge.

Liverpool still has the option to "correct the mistake."

One of the most notable aspects of the deal is that Liverpool is not obligated to buy Araujo outright. The purchase option is set at €55 million for summer 2027. This structure gives Liverpool a sufficiently long period to evaluate the Uruguayan player in the Premier League environment.

If Araujo adapts well, maintains his fitness, and becomes a suitable partner for Van Dijk, Liverpool can consider activating the buy option. Conversely, if he doesn't meet expectations or fitness issues resurface, Liverpool is not obligated to continue the deal.

This is a suitable approach given Liverpool's current defensive situation. The club has invested heavily in young center-backs like Leoni and Jacquet. Ifeanyi Ndukwe, the 18-year-old who impressed during the pre-season tour, is also considered to have potential as a long-term option. However, Ndukwe cannot play for Liverpool this season because he does not yet have a work permit.

Therefore, Liverpool needs a player who can bridge the two generations. Van Dijk is the leader of the defense, while Leoni, Jacquet, and Ndukwe represent the future. Araujo, at 27, can serve as the link during this transition period.

That is also why a one-season loan might be more sensible than an immediate purchase. Liverpool does not necessarily have to view Araujo as the number one future center-back right now. They just need him to solve the problems of the 2026-27 season, and then make a long-term decision based on actual performance.

Of course, the deal is not without risk. Araujo has had fitness issues and last season was no longer a regular starter at Barcelona. He started only 11 La Liga matches in the past season, although he still contributed to the Catalan club's title win.

Therefore, Liverpool needs to assess not only Araujo's technical ability but also his consistency over a season with a dense fixture schedule.
