A major television broadcaster in Vietnam is reportedly holding negotiations to acquire the broadcasting rights for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, with the tournament set to kick off in just about a month. However, the two sides have yet to reach a final agreement. This is seen as a significant signal, as no TV station in Vietnam has officially announced ownership of the broadcast rights as of now.

According to Ball Thai Stand, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 rights package for the Vietnamese market, covering all Premier-tier matches including Group A and Group B, is being offered at around $3 million, equivalent to over 78 billion VND. This fee is considered substantial and has become one of the major barriers for broadcasters aiming to bring the tournament to domestic audiences.

Vietnam is not alone in this situation; the Thai market is facing a similar challenge. FIFA is reportedly offering the broadcast rights for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 in Thailand for about $3 million, equivalent to nearly 99 million baht. The package includes all matches of the tournament, with 13 Premier matches and 7 Division 2 matches.

However, the price tag of nearly 100 million baht has not received a positive response from Thai TV stations. According to published information, no broadcaster has been willing to spend such a large amount to secure the rights. This means that both Vietnam and Thailand have yet to identify an official broadcaster for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

The challenge for broadcasters goes beyond just the rights fee. After acquiring the rights, TV stations must also invest in program production, signal transmission, personnel, and related operational activities. With total costs potentially reaching tens of billions of VND, the ability to recover investment through advertising, sponsorship, and other commercial sources becomes a critical factor that all parties must carefully consider.

The time for negotiations is shrinking as the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is only about a month away. Therefore, the ongoing talks by the Vietnamese broadcaster are attracting special attention. If the two sides can reach a common ground soon, local fans can rest assured and follow the tournament. Conversely, if the rights remain unsettled, the risk increases that viewers will face difficulties in watching this new Southeast Asian football event live.
