Quang Hải: The Small 'Giant' with a Thirst for Glory

Small in build yet possessing a great heart, Nguyễn Quang Hải knows better than anyone about sacrifice, persistence, and faithfulness—traits that turned an inquisitive boy from Đông Anh into a symbol of Vietnamese football.

Now, at 29, the captain of the Vietnam national team is aiming to lead his side to a second consecutive ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 title, as the defending champions prepare to face Malaysia in the semi-finals on August 16th.

Quang Hải's football journey is an inspiring story. He left home at the age of nine to pursue his dream, and despite often being physically disadvantaged compared to others, he shone thanks to his innate technical talent and his magical left foot.

As a child, Quang Hải spent his entire childhood chasing a ball on the pitch opposite his house, often begging older boys to let him play. His parents worked various jobs to make a living and raised their youngest son with good life values, before making the difficult decision to let Quang Hải leave home and join the youth academy of Hà Nội FC.

"I'm lucky because there was a football pitch right in front of my house, and if I didn't play football, I wouldn't know what else I would do," recalls Quang Hải, who is now the most-capped player for Vietnam with 84 appearances.

"Back then, no matter how hot or sunny it was, as long as we had a ball, my friends and I would play together. Most of us came from ordinary families and played football out of passion. Since I was little, my parents have nurtured and guided me to grow up to be a good person and a useful member of society."

Quang Hải progressed rapidly through the youth ranks and shone at various levels of Vietnam's national teams before truly making his name on the international stage at the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship. In that tournament, Vietnam reached the final, only to lose 1-2 to Uzbekistan in Changzhou, China.

Quang Hải scored five goals in that campaign, including a memorable free kick in the final match played on a snow-covered pitch. With Vietnam trailing by a goal, he executed a technical strike that curled over the Uzbekistan wall and into the top corner, equalizing for Vietnam. That goal was dubbed "Rainbow in the Snow" by Vietnamese media.

In late 2018, Quang Hải continued to show his growing influence in his first appearance at the Southeast Asian Championship, where Vietnam defeated Malaysia 3-2 on aggregate in the two-legged final. He was awarded the tournament's Best Player award for his contributions to Vietnam's second title in this competition, including an assist for Nguyễn Anh Đức's decisive goal in the second leg.

Amid the glory at the national team level and success at club level, where he also won many titles with Công An Hà Nội FC, Quang Hải always carries deep gratitude for his family, as well as for the late coach Vũ Minh Hoàng, his first teacher in youth football and a father figure to him.

"He was my late teacher and also my foster father. He guided me from the very first days and took care of me in place of my parents, helping me grow up. Even now, I always visit his family to maintain our bond and still help look after his children," Quang Hải shared.

As Vietnam prepares to enter the semi-finals of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup for the seventh consecutive time, Quang Hải understands that the team must be extremely cautious when traveling to Kuala Lumpur for the first leg against Malaysia on Sunday.

"Certainly, in every match and against every opponent, the coaching staff and all players must maintain the highest concentration and best preparation to achieve the best results in each game," said Quang Hải, who has scored two goals against Malaysia.

"For any opponent, there are no easy games, and matches away from home are always very difficult.

Certainly, being part of this tournament is an honor for me personally and for all my teammates. We will still play with the highest determination, the highest concentration, and the desire to contribute to the team's achievements, to once again bring joy to Vietnamese football fans."

Finally, Quang Hải still harbors bigger dreams: to be part of a Vietnam team that can create new milestones on the international stage, beyond Southeast Asia.

"For me, every day I wake up, step onto the training ground, and conquer titles and higher positions together with my teammates—that's the motivation that makes me never give up and never stop improving," he said.

"We hope to bring more titles to the Vietnam national team and, looking further ahead, achieve higher positions on bigger stages."

Standing only 1.68 m tall, there is no doubt that Quang Hải is one of the "giants" of Vietnamese football.
