Right-back Alif Ahmad is transforming criticism into fuel as the youngster gears up for the toughest test of his fledgling international career: taking on Vietnam in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup semifinal at 8:00 PM on August 16.
Alif faced heavy criticism after a poor performance in Malaysia's 2-1 win over Myanmar in their opening match of the tournament.
The 23-year-old admitted he felt pressure during his first appearances for the national team, but believes those experiences have only made him stronger.
Instead of letting negative comments affect him, Alif said he has turned them into motivation to improve with each game.

"For me, I consider all criticism as motivation, because from the very beginning I felt pressure since this is my first time playing for the national team," Alif said ahead of Tuesday's training session at UM Arena.
"I turn all the criticism into motivation, and luckily, I feel I have improved compared to my first match."
Alif's progress is even more remarkable considering that before his surprise call-up to the national team, he was still playing for Johor Darul Ta'zim II in the A1 Semi-Pro League.
Alif admitted he never thought he could make such a rapid leap, from a semi-professional league to representing the Harimau Malaya on the international stage.
"I didn't expect to go straight from the A1 League to the national team. But when I received the call-up, I saw it as my opportunity, and I am very grateful for that."
Alif described wearing the national team jersey as a dream and expressed gratitude for being given significant playing time in this tournament.
He also thanked captain Paulo Josue and the coaching staff for helping him adapt, noting that the captain always encourages the young players on the team.
With Vietnam set to be a much tougher challenge in the semifinals, Alif understands that the pressure and responsibility on him will only increase.
"It's a huge responsibility, but I am ready. If the coach continues to give me the chance to play, I will give my best. In the next match, I want to improve further and perform better."
