Multiple players face death threats, and the WTA player database suspected of being leaked?

Recently, several tennis players have received threatening messages suspected to be from gamblers, demanding that the players lose specific matches or else harm the players and their families, with some messages even issuing death threats.

Here are a few recent examples.

On February 8, Argentine tennis player Román Burruchaga reported to the police that he received death threats before the semifinals of the Rosario Challenger. One message read, "You bastard, you must lose to Chinese player Tseng Chun-hsin today." Another message stated, "We have enough guns to silence you and your family. Don't think you're clever. If you perform well and lose 0-2, everything will be fine. Otherwise, I guarantee you won't leave Rosario." The threats also included details about Burruchaga's family and a photo of a gun. Despite immense pressure, Burruchaga won the semifinal 6-3, 6-3.

Before a quarterfinal match at last week's WTA 125 in Antalya, Turkey, Hungarian player Panna Udvardy posted on Instagram that she received multiple threatening messages on WhatsApp from an unknown number. "The person told me they would harm my family if I didn't lose the match today. They said they knew where my family lives, what car they drive, and their phone numbers. They even sent photos of my family and a picture of a gun. Honestly, receiving such messages is really terrifying."

Udvardy immediately reported the incident to Turkish authorities. Police quickly launched an investigation, and the Hungarian consulate in Turkey dispatched three police officers to monitor Udvardy's match on-site. Police also provided protection at her parents' and grandmother's homes. Amid such tense circumstances, Udvardy ultimately lost the match.

Stefanini posted a video on social media describing the death threats she encountered

During last week's Indian Wells qualifying tournament, Italian player Lucrezia Stefanini reported to the WTA, "I received a WhatsApp message threatening me and my family because I won yesterday's match. They pointed out my parents and my birthplace and sent me a photo of a gun." Tournament officials reacted swiftly upon learning of the threat, enhancing her security during the event and arranging escorts for her safe travel to and from the competition venue.

Recent threats against players have become increasingly common, and the perpetrators possess private information such as players' phone numbers, social media accounts, and family addresses, raising concerns that the player database may have been leaked.

Currently, the WTA has launched an investigation into suspected data leakage, stating that no evidence of any data breach has been found yet. At a press conference in Indian Wells, Naomi Osaka commented on such incidents.

Question: A Turkish female player received violent threats last night, demanding that she deliberately lose her match in Turkey today. This incident may be related to a suspected WTA data leak. I would like to ask you, first, have you been affected by this suspected data leak incident? Second, what are your thoughts on the increasing prevalence of sports betting and the occurrence of such threatening events?

Naomi Osaka: Was someone threatening her face-to-face?

Host: After the press conference, I can provide you with more relevant information.

Naomi Osaka: I was also paying attention to related news, but actually, I have no knowledge about this matter. Is the Turkish player Zeynep?

Question: No, it's Panna.

Naomi Osaka: Zeynep is a Turkish player, right?

Question: She is indeed, but the player threatened this time is another Turkish player.

Naomi Osaka: Okay, this is really outrageous. Sorry, I don't have much deep understanding of this matter...

Question: Then, do you have any views on sports betting itself?

Naomi Osaka: Sports betting?

Question: Have you ever encountered similar harassment related to betting?

Naomi Osaka: Perhaps I have, but I don't pay attention to it... I just live my life normally, accepting whatever happens. I don't know if this is a positive or negative mindset, but I've always handled it this way.

In my view, saying sports betting is entirely worthless might be a bit absolute, as I am a professional athlete in this industry and can see its other side. But I really can't see its positive aspects, especially when some people no longer view athletes as ordinary individuals.

I know some people place huge bets, but that is their own choice, and they shouldn't blame athletes for the consequences. Because athletes care much more deeply about winning or losing matches than those who place bets. So, threatening someone's life over betting results is truly insane.Source: Tennis Home Author: Yun Juan Yun Shu
