Zheng Qinwen's Dual-Coach Model: Foreign Media Says the Top Player is Paying for Her Own Mistake, While Team Report Points Out a Hidden Concern

Zheng Qinwen, who is preparing for the WTA1000 Miami Open, recently confirmed the adoption of a dual-coach model with veteran coaches Pere Riba and Baghdatis co-coaching. Regarding this decision, many foreign media have offered their perspectives.

The changes in Zheng Qinwen's team started early this month. While preparing for the Indian Wells tournament, Zheng was noticed by netizens to have unfollowed Riba on social media, sparking immediate heated discussion. Subsequently, Baghdatis announced his joining of the team, making the rumors of a "split between coach and player" seem confirmed, causing an uproar among fans.

However, dramatically, Zheng Qinwen clarified in an interview at Indian Wells that Riba had not left, but fans remained speculative about the conflict between them. It was only when Riba returned during Zheng's training in Miami recently that the outside world finally felt reassured. In a pre-match interview, she also confirmed that Riba would partner with Baghdatis in co-coaching.

“I have always wanted to try technical changes to reach a higher level, hoping their cooperation can bring me new experiences,” Zheng Qinwen explained. “Currently, Baghdatis is the main coach, and adjustments might be made in the future. I really enjoy working with both of them at the moment.”

From the training scenes, the division of responsibilities is initially clear: Baghdatis focuses on serve and offensive aggression, while Riba handles tactical planning and psychological regulation.

Regarding this reversal, several foreign media outlets view it as Zheng Qinwen "paying for" and correcting her impulsive decision.

American Tennis.com considers the dual-coach setup a smart compromise. The report stated, “Riba's return stabilizes the foundational tactics and psychology, while Baghdatis injects offensive vitality. A clear division of responsibilities can address the single coach's limited capacity. This is clearly the best remedy after the 'unfollowing incident' to mend the rift.”

ESPN commented that Riba is the team's "ballast stone," more familiar with Zheng Qinwen's match habits and emotional management than anyone else. “After the chaos at Indian Wells, bringing back Riba equals admitting the rashness of the previous decision. Now Baghdatis brings offensive aggression,正好补短板——这是在为错误买单,但买得值。”

Tennis World notes that this is a configuration for top players, but also points out that Riba's return can quickly restore team trust. “The Miami points-defense match is the best test. If she wins, this 'unfollowing episode' will be forgotten; if she loses, criticism will double.”

BBC Sport analysis suggests that the dual-coach model reduces the risk of changing coaches, avoiding a complete overhaul of Riba's system. “For Zheng Qinwen during a ranking decline, this is a 'safe冒险', but also a necessary correction.”

However, amidst the optimistic voices, French newspaper L'Équipe poured cold water. The media pointed out sharply that Baghdatis lacks sufficient coaching experience, having only briefly coached Wu Yibing, and lacks top-level women's singles major tournament experience. More critically, “Riba's return seems more like a 'firefighter' than a long-term plan. The root of this team adjustment lies in the previous impulsive decision; now Zheng Qinwen is simply paying for that mistake. Additionally, whether the two can coexist peacefully long-term is questionable.”

German magazine Tennis raises practical doubts: “The dual-coach model is extremely costly, and successful cases in tennis are rare; most eventually revert to a single coach. If she exits early again in Miami, the trust好不容易建立的信任会进一步动摇. Spending heavily on dual coaches, if ineffective, this 'investment' becomes too expensive.”

The incident also sparked heated discussion among domestic fans. Some joked about the maneuver: “Unfollowing was just to free up热搜位 for the new coach? This wave of流量算是给玩明白了, but ultimately she had to invite Riba back herself—what was the point?”

Some rational analysts believe: “Bringing back Riba shows she realized her impulsiveness; correcting the mistake promptly is good. The dual-coach configuration itself isn't problematic;关键是能不能磨合好.”

Of course,更多更多人将目光投向即将到来的迈阿密赛: “Regardless of how many coaches, on court she still has to perform herself. This is a crucial points-defense match; she must first bring out her form, otherwise her ranking will drop further.”

For Zheng Qinwen, Miami is a不容有失的“points-defense生死战”. Last year she reached the quarter-finals here, defending 215 points. If she fails again, not only will her world ranking face further decline, possibly falling out of the top 30, but her seeding for the subsequent clay season will also be severely affected.

Zheng Qinwen, who has a first-round bye, will face the winner between Stephens and Brady in the second round, and may later encounter her top nemesis Sabalenka. The draw is tough, but fortunately, the person who understands her best has returned as a "firefighter."

Is the dual-coach model a miracle solution or an expensive burden? Can Riba's return truly弥补之前的决策失误? The hard courts of Miami will provide the first answer.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Lu Xiaotian)
