French teenage tennis player Moise Kouame is emerging as a sensation in the global tennis world following a debut that could not have been more remarkable at the Miami Open 2026.
At age 17 (turning 17 on March 6), Kouame made history by becoming the fourth youngest player ever to win a Masters 1000 level match, and also the youngest to achieve this since the legendary Rafael Nadal in 2003.
Playing with a wildcard entry, Kouame demonstrated astonishing resilience by rallying to defeat American player Zachary Svajda with scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a match lasting 2 hours and 17 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium. This was only his second official match in the ATP main draw, but the 1.91m tall player showed a rare tenacity for a teenage contender.

French teenage tennis player Moise Kouame is causing a stir in the world tennis arena after a debut that was nothing short of spectacular at the Miami Open 2026.
The turning point of the match came in the second set, when Kouame faced imminent defeat. He trailed 0-40 in a crucial service game while down 3-4, just five points away from stopping his run. However, Kouame produced a stunning comeback by winning 14 of the next 16 points to push the match into the deciding set. Despite physical issues requiring medical attention, and even signs of cramping toward the end, the young French player persevered to seal the historic win.
Not only becoming the youngest player ever to win a match at the Miami Open, Kouame is also the first person born in 2009 to secure a victory in an ATP Tour match. Against Svajda, he successfully saved 10 out of 12 break points faced, unleashed 30 direct winning shots (winners), including 11 aces, though he also committed 11 double faults – a figure reflecting the explosive yet risky nature of a young talent.
This achievement ensures Kouame will make a significant leap on the ATP rankings, as he entered the tournament ranked 385th in the world. After the match, the 17-year-old player could not hide his excitement: he admitted this was "a major milestone," and affirmed that being listed alongside top champions gives him confidence that he is on the right path.
Kouame's ambitions are also substantial: he aims to become world number one and win Grand Slam titles in the future. Notably, this young talent revealed he received a congratulatory message from his idol Novak Djokovic, which made him "shake so much he didn't know how to reply."
In the second round, Kouame is expected to face world number 21 Jiri Lehecka – the next major challenge in the promising journey of France's new "rough diamond" in tennis.
