Players from the Czech Republic are truly becoming a nightmare for the current top young star of the WTA, Alexandra Eala.
A heavy defeat in the fourth round of the Miami Open 2026 against Karolina Muchova once again shows that the "Czech curse" has not released the Filipino player, despite her clear progress and form over the past year.
In the match that took place early this morning, Muchova, the 14th seed, demonstrated superior class by easily crushing Eala with a score of 6-0, 6-2. From the very first games, the Czech player completely controlled the match, breaking her opponent's serve and giving Eala no chance to regain rhythm. Muchova's dominance came not only from powerful shots but also from her extremely intelligent ability to orchestrate the match.

Muchova is too strong for Eala
The statistics show a clear disparity between the two players. Muchova won 80% of points on her first serve, while Eala only achieved 39%. Conversely, the Czech player also won 64% of points returning her opponent's first serve, compared to Eala's modest 20%. This reflects Muchova's comprehensive superiority in both attack and defense.
This is already the second consecutive WTA 1000 tournament where Eala has been eliminated by a Czech player. Previously at Indian Wells, Linda Noskova also halted her progress in the fourth round. Notably, this defeat brings Eala's head-to-head record against Czech players down to an alarming number: 0 wins – 12 losses. Clearly, this is no longer a coincidence but has become a real jinx for the player born in 2005.
Nevertheless, looking overall, Eala's journey at this year's Miami Open can still be considered positive. Making it to the fourth round of such a major tournament continues to show her stability in the 2026 season. Prior to this, Eala also reached the quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, indicating she is gradually establishing her position among the notable players of the WTA.
However, failing to replicate last year's semifinal achievement causes Eala to lose 270 ranking points. This is likely to push her outside the world's top 40.
Interestingly, despite her on-court defeats, Eala remains one of the most famous and beloved names on the tour. Even top stars like Coco Gauff admit that Eala might be the player with the largest fan base currently. Gauff believes if tennis had jerseys like football, Eala could even outsell her.
This view is also reinforced by Iva Jovic, Eala's close friend on the tour. Jovic emphasizes that the Filipino fan base always appears in large numbers at tournaments, creating a great source of motivation for the young player.
Currently, Eala has about 1 million followers on Instagram, less than Gauff's 2.3 million, but this gap is rapidly narrowing. Her development in both professionalism and image helps Eala become one of the most promising faces in women's world tennis.
After concluding the Sunshine Double, Eala will transition to the clay court season, expected to start at the Linz Open in April.
