Rafael Nadal defends his fellow player Carlos Alcaraz following doubts about the world number one after his loss at the Miami Open 2026.
Concerns about Carlos Alcaraz's form after his early exit at Miami Open 2026 have become a hot topic in tennis circles. However, legend Rafael Nadal quickly reassured the public, stating that criticism directed at the young player is unnecessary.
Alcaraz disappoints by stopping in round 3 of this year's Miami Open after losing to Sebastian Korda. This marks the second consecutive year the Spanish player has failed to advance deep in this tournament. Earlier, he also lost to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of Indian Wells.
Nevertheless, overall, Carlitos' 2026 season remains very impressive. He holds a record of 17 wins - 2 losses, and clinched the Australian Open title to complete a Career Grand Slam at age 22, along with an ATP 500 title in Doha. His 16-match unbeaten streak at the start of the season demonstrates remarkable consistency.
Therefore, Nadal believes questioning Alcaraz's form is unfair. "He just won the Australian Open, has 7 Grand Slams, and is the world number one. So what? Does he need to win every match? That's impossible.", Rafa shared with the press.
According to the "King of Clay," two consecutive losses cannot negate what Alcaraz has achieved. Nadal emphasized that fans should not place excessive expectations on a player still developing, despite reaching the pinnacle very early.
Nadal himself understands the pressure Alcaraz faces. The strong rise of his fellow player coincides with Rafa's late career stage, creating expectations of a perfect "successor" for Spanish tennis. However, Nadal warns that comparisons and overly high expectations can have negative effects.
"What we should do is celebrate and thank Carlos for what he has brought to Spanish sports.", Nadal added.
After the stumble in Miami, Alcaraz is expected to return at the Monte Carlo Masters in early April, kicking off the clay season - where he will have to defend a large number of points.
