The "Sabalenka vs. Rybakina showdown" arrived as scheduled, with Zhang Shuai saving 4 match points in a thrilling comeback to advance to the women's doubles semifinals.

On March 25, 2026, the WTA1000 Miami tournament held the women's singles quarter-finals for the upper half. Aryna Sabalenka defeated local player Baptiste 6-4/6-4, while Elena Rybakina reversed 5th seed Pegula 2-6/6-3/6-4. The top two ranked players in women's tennis successfully met in the semifinals, finalizing the semifinal lineup.

Third seed Elena Rybakina took the stage first in the day session, facing local star Pegula. They had met twice this season at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, with the newly crowned world No. 2 prevailing both times. In this match, Pegula, who had already suffered four consecutive losses to Rybakina, came prepared. In the first set, her first-serve winning rate reached 85%, and after securing two breaks, she took the set 6-2. In the second set, Rybakina finally achieved her first break of the match after saving four break points, maintaining her advantage to win 6-3 and level the match. In the decisive third set, Rybakina seized control after converting a break in the opening game, ultimately sealing the victory 6-4.

Aryna Sabalenka

Defending champion and top seed Aryna Sabalenka faced another local player, Baptiste, in the night session. Baptiste had performed impressively in this tournament, successively eliminating four formidable players: T. Maria, Samsonova, Svitolina, and Ostapenko. Baptiste continued to play well in this match, but the world No. 1 dominated with convincing performance throughout. In the second set, although Sabalenka faced a counter-break after securing an early break, Baptiste committed three double faults in a must-hold service game, ultimately costing her the match.

This semifinal will be the 17th encounter between Sabalenka and Rybakina, with Sabalenka leading the head-to-head record 9-7 and winning their recent final clash in Indian Wells. However, Rybakina also has experience consecutively defeating Sabalenka in major tournament finals. This renewed face-off across the net promises to be a "clash of titans."

Zhang Shuai

In women's doubles, the fourth-seeded pair Zhang Shuai/Mertens faced fierce resistance from Pegula/Hunter. Trailing 5-9 in the decisive tie-break, they saved four consecutive match points and narrowly won 14-12, completing a stunning comeback with scores of 2-6/6-3/14-12 and advancing passionately to the semifinals. In the semifinals, they will face top seeds Errani/Paolini, who swept sixth seeds Lutlif/Mohamed 6-3/6-1.

Zhang Shuai remarked after the match: "I usually think reaching world No. 2 in doubles is quite good, but when I consider that the other three on court were all former world No. 1s, I think: Oh?! Actually, it's still pretty good. Elise always takes care of me; she plays very intelligently and often gives me great advice during matches, and I've become smarter in my play too."
