(Tennis result) - Alexander Zverev had a harder match than expected against Flavio Cobolli to win Roland Garros for the first time - also the first Grand Slam title of Sascha's career.
Main content
Alexander Zverev won his first Roland Garros title - his first Grand Slam - after defeating Flavio Cobolli 3-2 (6-1; 4-6; 6-4; 6-7; 6-1) in a final that ended in the early hours of June 8 Vietnam time.
It seemed like an easy match for Zverev, but poor mental play at crucial moments kept hurting the German. In contrast, Cobolli started very stiff but grew into the match, showing a warrior spirit - and sometimes surprising fans with his own unbelievable errors.
The battle of wits and stamina between the two truly ended only in the fifth set when Cobolli ran out of gas. Zverev made mistakes but showed the right composure to save himself. That composure helped Sascha achieve the feat and conquer the big title that was missing from his collection.
Zverev became the first German player to win a Grand Slam in 30 years, since Boris Becker (Australian Open 1996). He is also the third player born in the 1990s to claim a Major, after Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev.

6-1:Cobolli keeps making errors and the first Roland Garros title - first Grand Slam - goes to Zverev!!!!
5-1:No mistakes from Sascha.
4-1:Love game and the first point for Cobolli in set 5.
4-0:Cobolli can only blame himself for squandering a dozen chances. Credit also goes to Zverev's great fighting spirit in this game.
3-0:He dragged Zverev to a fifth set only to collapse. Both the physical and mental warrior spirit of Cobolli at the biggest moment of his career are clearly declining.
2-0:Extremely difficult as Zverev served two double faults, then faced a break-point but successfully saved it. If Cobolli had used his net opportunities better, Sascha would have sweated much more.
1-0:Quite similar to the first game of the final when Cobolli served. He missed chances and faced a break-point, fought hard to save points, but still lost. Zverev takes an early lead in the deciding set.
Cobolli serves first in set 5.
Set 4: Zverev 6-7 (5-7 tie-break) Cobolli.
6-7 (5-7 tie-break): A tie-break with extremely unpredictable developments. Cobolli led by a mini-break, then lost two serve points in a row, but Zverev did not fully capitalize, allowing Cobolli to tie 3-3 before the changeover.
A costly double fault put Zverev facing set point, but Cobolli missed one of them incredibly with a rushed smash. The chance to save the situation was in Sascha's hands with his serve, but he lost to a classy running forehand from the opponent.
6-6:Love game for Cobolli. Now a tie-break.
6-5:Zverev reproduced the "Serbian specialty" but then finished the game with an ace.
5-5:Continuous high-class play from Zverev. If Sascha played like this regularly, the final would probably have lasted only three sets.
4-5:Zverev's effort to stay close. Now a decisive game for Cobolli.
3-5:Cobolli extends the lead.
3-4: Unbelievable, Zverev! A series of puzzling decisions put him once again in a chasing position.
3-3:Quite unfortunate for Cobolli. Down 0-40, the Italian played with great composure to tie at 40-40, but then lost two straight points and allowed Zverev to equalize.
2-3:Not yet the ideal game for Zverev, but he still got what he needed.
1-3:Zverev's drop shot was too obvious, missing a break-point chance, and immediately Cobolli handled his service game cleanly.
1-2: Zverev's first point in set 4.

Set 3: Zverev 6-4 Cobolli
6-4:And indeed it happened: a self-destruct game from Cobolli after leading 30-0, followed by consecutive errors. Set 3 belongs to Zverev, and his first Grand Slam is just one set away.

3-5: Cobolli is on fire.
3-4:Zverev's most difficult service game of the final, and he could not save the break. Four deuces, two break-points faced; Cobolli played somewhat safe on most important points, but Zverev "self-destructed". A double fault and a puzzling forehand caused the German-born Russian to fall behind for the first time.
3-3:Zverev continues to hit great backhands, but Cobolli still holds his serve.
3-2:Second consecutive love game for the 2024 Roland Garros runner-up.

1-0:A service game where Zverev fully controlled the rallies.

4-1: Cobolli cannot finish rallies against Zverev, leading to errors. Two more break-points faced, and the 10th seed could not save them. Set 1 is slipping away from Cobolli.
